Herdsmen Attack; Soldiers Deployed In Oyo State To Avoid Reprisal.

Soldiers were yesterday deployed at Oje Owode town in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State to nip in the bud reprisal by the Yoruba youth. This followed the escalation of crisis that attended the killing of a popular farmer in the town by a Fulani herdsman.

The state Police Commissioner, Abiodun Odude, said the herdsman, now on the run, with some others, waylaid and attacked the farmer known as Jelili with machete in retaliation for the death of his cattle through poisoning. Odude said the police were on the trail of the assailants.

He said: “We are aware of developments there.

There is nothing going on in the state that we don’t know. It is a case of murder.

A farmer was killed because of his (herdsman’s) cow which he accused the farmer of killing.

“I have told their leader there to look for him and we will get him. We have stationed some men there.

So, there is calm in the place now.” A reliable source from the town, however, said that the crisis had escalated.

“Some youths in Oki have taken to the streets, protesting the killing of the farmer.

They are searching from house to house, looking for the herdsmen. Soldiers have been deployed there,” the source added.
