Pep agreed a jaw dropping new contract to stay with newly crowned Premier League champions until the summer 2021.
Guardiola had a season left on the three-year deal he signed when joined City in summer 2016, but City’s Abu Dhabi hierarchy have been desperate to keep him at Etihad for much longer and he has now agreed to stay with the newly crowned Premier League champions until the summer of 2021.“I am so happy and excited, it’s a pleasure to be able to work here,” Guardiola said.
“I enjoy working with our players every day and we will try to do our best together in the coming years. As a manager, you have to feel good to be with the players – and I feel good.
“I will focus on the desire of my players to become a better team and every day that’s what I will try to do, to improve on the pitch and improve our players.
"We have a young squad with an average age of 23 and we want to keep taking steps forward and maintain the levels we’ve achieved this season.”
Their was speculations that Guardiola only wanted to sign for one season at this stage but the fact he had agreed to stay for two extra seasons with the original contract, has boosted City’s ambitions of creating a dynasty of domination in English football and conquering Europe.
The Spaniard’s new three-year term is reckoned to be worth around £20m a season, with bonuses.
Guardiola led City to record-breaking title triumph, as well as the Carabao Cup, to take his tally of major trophies to 23 in just nine seasons as a manager.
And Manchester City have been hailed as the best team in Premier League history for their pacy, attacking style.
They became the first top flight team in English football history to record 100 points and also set Premier League records for wins, goals and their 19-point winning margin over runners-up Manchester United.
Guardiola’s target is for City to become the first team to win back-to-back domestic titles since United in 2009 as well as win the Champions League for the first time. They have gone out of Europe in the last 16 round and quarter-finals in his first two seasons as manager.
CEO Ferran Soriano: “Pep’s contract extension is fantastic news for Manchester City, we have all been privileged to witness how we have played beautiful football, won titles, broken records and reached the incredible mark of 100 Premier League points.
Pep has shown this style can succeed in the Premier League in a way it has never been done before.
“This season has been another step of our strategic plan and the continuous effort to improve the football we play, we are very pleased with the progress. There is more work to be done and having Pep committed to Manchester City for the next three seasons gives us the stability to be able to continue our journey to beautiful football and success for the club.”
